Chicago's Urban Agriculture scene is one of the most vibrant in the country and continues to grow with innovative and impactful projects that not only beautify our city but also contribute to the wellbeing of our communities. FamilyFarmed continues to highlight the leading farm sites, community programs, and sustainability incubators in Chicago with this twice-yearly bus tour. Each tour brings a new perspective and shows the best work that is happening all around the city.
Pick-up location is the Kitchfix Gold Coast Store, 1165 N. State St. Chicago, IL 60610. They will have muffins and coffee available, plus a number of delicious items for purchase. The store will open at 8:30 am to allow us to check in and be ready for the bus to pick-up at 9 am.
And a Good Food snack and water will be provided on the tour.
This spring we will be visiting three amazing sites:
The Chicago Lights Urban Farm is dedicated to cultivating a thoughtful and engaged community of youth and adults through educational and economic opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and access to fresh, local, and sustainably grown produce.
Urban Autism Solutions is dedicated to changing outcomes for young adults with autism through an integrated community life that advances social and vocational opportunities. Our farm interns learn skills in the agriculture space and how to follow structured employment tasks while also gaining soft skills. Our teachers, volunteers and agency staff engage in daily farm work with our farm interns while modeling and teaching the curriculum that will lead to future success in the workplace.
Urban Growers Collective's approach is to demonstrate and support communities in developing community-based food systems where food is grown, prepared, and distributed within their home communities. In this way, vulnerable populations help themselves by learning how to provide for their own needs in a sustainable manner.
